In late May 1779, British Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Clinton launched an offensive to eliminate the rebellion in New York, wreck the commerce of New England, and destroy General George Washington's Continental Army in battle. A key element of Clinton's offensive was a push to control the Hudson River, the most strategically important, and heavily fortified, river in America at the time. The events that played out over the next three months comprised the little-known campaign of 1779 and typified combat in the middle of the American Revolution - brutal civil war raged in the counties around New York City, the British unleashed devastating raids on the Connecticut coast with methods their commander called "Desolation Warfare," and elite units of American Continental infantry stunned the British with skillfull night bayonet attacks at the fortified posts of Stony Point and Paulus Hook. Through it all, shadowy networks of spies and scouts on both sides fed information to their commanders while they operated in secret, always fearing discovery, trial, and hanging. This book reveals the soldiers, officers, commanders, militiamen, and civilians that fought this under-appreciated campaign, which helped set the stage for America's final victory in the Revolution.

George Washington's "Forgotten" Campaign
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:
'Histories of the Revolutionary War pay little attention to the operations of George Washington and his army in 1779. In this book, however, retired army officer and journalist Schellhammer, also the author of The 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Civil War and other works, focuses on the year. He notes that Washington conducted one of the most important campaigns of the war, as the British made a major attempt to secure control of the Hudson. Characterized by notable Patriot victories at Stoney Point and Paulus Hook, as well as British raids on Connecticut and up the Hudson, and despite the treason of Benedict Arnold, Washington managed to keep the enemy pent up in New York City. This ended their last effort to win the war in the North, confirming the need for a Southern strategy that would eventually also fail. Well written, and providing interesting detail on the organization, equipment, and tactics of both armies, as well as profiles of numerous soldiers, including many relatively minor figures who played notable roles, this work will prove valuable reading for anyone interested the American Revolution.'

Don't Miss this Look at Important Part of the American Revolution

History is often defined by the small events that happen behind the scenes or in between the grand activities. While the Hudson River Campaign of 1779 is often forgotten by popular historical studies, it's importance to the ultimate outcome of the war can not be overstated. The author does a great job at telling the interesting stories surrounding this campaign and exploring the real life characters of those who lived it. A detailed analysis, but not to the point of saturation. I enjoyed every chapter!
