Martin Kohan was born in 1967 in Buenos Aires where he lives . He is the author of an essay on Walter Benjamin. Seconds Out was the first of his novels to be translated into English. School for Patriots>, won the prestigious Herralde Novel Prize in Spain.

This book was boring, and could have been a lot better.
By Just the facts.
I read this book since I enjoy reading literature from South America. Based on the summary of the book and how it won an award I thought it was going to be a well written book. It was disappointing since the book had a lot of potential and was poorly written, had characters that I did not care about, and it was entirely way too predictable. The character of Marita or Maria Teresa should have been in a convent and I do not believe that even a woman in the early 1980s in Argentina would not know what male genitals look like. The book glosses over and almost ignores the kidnapping, torture, and death of students in the 70s during "the night of the pencils" and the entire topic of desaparecidos or people who were kidnapped and killed. Yes the book does take place during the Falklands war but that too is glossed over and takes a backseat when it comes to Marita's obsession with doing nothing but going into the boy's bathroom of her school and spying on the male students.
The last chapter of the book was written in a sloppy way by the author as it just pretended everything was perfectly tolerable, and OK in Argentina.
I am giving the book 2 stars and not 1 because I did keep reading the book hoping that it would get better or that it would discuss topics such as "the night of the pencils", the dirty war in the mid 70s, the Falklands war, or los desaparecidos all in great detail however it did not.
