About the Author
David L. Sidebottom is Associate Professor in the Physics Department at Creighton University. He is an experienced teacher and has taught a wide variety of courses at both undergraduate and graduate level in subject areas including introductory physics, thermodynamics, electrodynamics, laser physics and solid state physics. He has taught a course on solid state physics since 2003, adapting and revising its content to reflect the broader themes of condensed matter physics beyond those of the conventional solid state. This textbook stems from that course.

Difficult Book to Really Learn From

As a book that is advertised to represent the fundamental concepts of the subject matter it is difficult to really get through some of these concepts. Many concepts are poorly explained, equations presented without an adequate derivation, problems in the back of the book provided with little relation to the content of the chapter, and a lack of inclusion of example problems. This book truly is difficult to learn from and if it weren't for an accompanying lecture section then it would almost be completely worthless to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts. With that being said it does present a relatively satisfactory overview of many concepts in the field and thus is okay to simply read, but if you are looking for a book to work through some of the math then this is not for you.

So Much Missing

As someone trying to learn from this book, I find the exercises infuriating. They are constantly about subjects not covered in the book. It's like the book is on an introductory level, but the homework assumes you already have an intermediate level understanding and doesn't need to explain how any of its broad claims are derived. I think it's a bad sign when you need to use a more advanced text book to work through the homework problems.

Poor choice for introductory class

For a reference book to keep on a shelf, this book may do the trick, however when it comes to learning solid state physics this book leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the material in this book is referenced from Kittel's books, (which are the standard) so much so that to understand the material in the book, the reader must keep Kittel right beside them while reading since the author references the Kittel book so often without full explanation of he own. The statement "Please see Kittel for this" is used so often in this book, I gave up and started just using Kittel for learning from. There are also many mistakes in the homework problems, that make it difficult to use.
Overall I would not buy this book for teaching or learning from. And since the book references Kittel and Griffith's so much I wont even keep it as a reference, since I can just use those classics
