…a nice balance between a review of what the evidence shows and practical advice and suggestions based on that review. It also focuses on difficult to treat cases, situations where combining medications or trying newer somatic therapies might be in order. I particularly liked when authors attempted to criticize the studies (instead of just summarizing them)….a very digestible review of what is considered state-of-the-art in the management of major depression.

Thomas L. Schwartz is Professor and Vice Chair of Psychiatry and Director of Medical Student Psychiatric Training at State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He is an author of Depression: Treatment Strategies and Management, 2nd edition and Integrating Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology: A Handbook for Clinicians. He teaches nationally and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.
