About the Author
David L. Sidebottom is Associate Professor in the Physics Department at Creighton University. He is an experienced teacher and has taught a wide variety of courses at both undergraduate and graduate level in subject areas including introductory physics, thermodynamics, electrodynamics, laser physics and solid state physics. He has taught a course on solid state physics since 2003, adapting and revising its content to reflect the broader themes of condensed matter physics beyond those of the conventional solid state. This textbook stems from that course.

Difficult Book to Really Learn From

As a book that is advertised to represent the fundamental concepts of the subject matter it is difficult to really get through some of these concepts. Many concepts are poorly explained, equations presented without an adequate derivation, problems in the back of the book provided with little relation to the content of the chapter, and a lack of inclusion of example problems. This book truly is difficult to learn from and if it weren't for an accompanying lecture section then it would almost be completely worthless to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts. With that being said it does present a relatively satisfactory overview of many concepts in the field and thus is okay to simply read, but if you are looking for a book to work through some of the math then this is not for you.

So Much Missing

As someone trying to learn from this book, I find the exercises infuriating. They are constantly about subjects not covered in the book. It's like the book is on an introductory level, but the homework assumes you already have an intermediate level understanding and doesn't need to explain how any of its broad claims are derived. I think it's a bad sign when you need to use a more advanced text book to work through the homework problems.

Poor choice for introductory class

For a reference book to keep on a shelf, this book may do the trick, however when it comes to learning solid state physics this book leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the material in this book is referenced from Kittel's books, (which are the standard) so much so that to understand the material in the book, the reader must keep Kittel right beside them while reading since the author references the Kittel book so often without full explanation of he own. The statement "Please see Kittel for this" is used so often in this book, I gave up and started just using Kittel for learning from. There are also many mistakes in the homework problems, that make it difficult to use.

Overall I would not buy this book for teaching or learning from. And since the book references Kittel and Griffith's so much I wont even keep it as a reference, since I can just use those classics

Dr. Taylor Field has served as the pastor director of Graffiti Community Ministries in New York City for the last 25 years. Graffiti Community Ministries serves and empowers children, youth, and adults on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He works together with his wife, Susan Field. Taylor has a PhD from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and an MDiv from Princeton Seminary. Taylor has written four books including Squat. He has two married children who are both working in ministry in New York City.

Rethinking the way we lead

The way we usually measure success is by charts that show an upward trend or by membership increasing or by building larger buildings. But author Taylor Field suggests in his book Upside Down Leadership that perhaps our measures have been wrong - or upside down. Perhaps we should look at how Jesus led - by choosing the underdogs, the misfits, as His disciples instead of choosing the honor students from the Rabbinical school; by having dinner with the down and outs, by touching people deemed "unclean" by society. Perhaps WE need to hang out with the "wrong" people sometimes and measure our success, not by numbers, but by changed lives- even if we don't see any immediate reward. This was a very thought-provoking, insightful book. Highly recommended for any leader, especially church leaders!

I loved this!
By The Art of Steering
Upside-Down Leadership by Taylor Field was a really refreshing read.

Because of my developing research and ministry interests, I've read a lot of leadership books, especially on leadership in the church and the kingdom, and after a while I can feel jaded because I'm not reading anything new. And, in some ways, the same is true of Field's latest offering: there is little here that I have not heard said before. Nevertheless, I loved this book! It's so great because the teaching about servant leadership is rooted solidly in the author's practice as a church and ministry leader in an inner-city context. Yet personal experience is not the only source of his thinking and writing: he draws heavily on the lives of saints who have gone before us for inspiration and learnings on what he calls 'unleadership'.

It was the final pages enumerating Field's 'gallery of unleaders' which I loved the most. I'm not sure that Field would have intended this as it is almost an appendix to the main content of the book. But it is here that you can see those who have been Field's mentors through their writing and living and I learned much from it. There were things about some of the unleaders whom Field names which I never knew; also, there were also a couple of names I had not come across before.

I've read a lot of review copies of various books in the last month or so (about twenty at the last count, I think). Most of them I could honestly take or leave. Perhaps such pickiness is the curse of reading too widely in the Christian popular writing market! So, please hear me all the more loudly when I say this: although there is not necessarily that much which is new in it, I really liked this book. I have highlighted more sections in it than is normal for me. I look forward to following up some of Field's references in time. And, so, I wholeheartedly recommend it to you if you are in Christian leadership as a breath of fresh air.

GRAT BOOK FOR ALL CHRISTIANS!

I have known Taylor Field for many years and worked alongside him for 16 years. He lives what this book is all about and "it works"!!!! Biblical principals to live by no matter what "role" you have in your life. It is well worth the read.

About the Author
Chris Goode is a writer, director, performer and musician, and lead artist of Chris Goode & Company. His diverse body of work has been seen in venues ranging from Sydney Opera House and Tate Modern to the most marginal spaces on the London fringe. His credits include four Fringe First award-winning shows: Men in the Cities, Monkey Bars, Kiss of Life, and (with Unlimited Theatre) Neutrino; he also won the Headlong/Gate New Directions Award for his radical version of Chekhov, ...SISTERS, at the Gate Theatre. Chris is a former artistic director of Camden People's Theatre and he now directs the all-male ensemble Ponyboy Curtis.

I was prepared to really like this book - but not prepared for how much! My usual reaction to a JKD book is to read something - marvel at the simple-yet-deeper way she sees it - and then think "Duh! Of course!" This book was full of those moments. :) Great mind-twirling stuff.

My husband and I are conducting a Facebook discussion on this book using FB's "secret group" feature. New technologies have created so many deep friendship of people you'd love to sit around your kitchen table and share with - but no way to make it happen. Facebook to the rescue. I'll let y'all know how it goes. We are really excited.

Having used many devotional through the years, I can share that this is the best ever. Jennifer Kennedy Dean hears God and He has given her the gift of words to convey His Word to us. She brings in-site into Scripture and makes it understandable and a blessing each of the 28 days of the devotions. She will stretch your relationship with God to new heights. About the Author
Henry Blackaby is the author of Experiencing God, which has sold 5 million copies and has been translated into 50 languages. He is president of Blackaby Ministries International, an organization he founded to help people experience God in a more intimate way. Born in British Columbia, Dr. Blackaby has devoted his lifetime to ministry. He has served as a music director, education director, and pastor in churches in California and Canada, as well as president of Canadian Baptist Theological College for seven years and president of the Canadian Southern Baptist Conference. Dr. Blackaby went on to serve as special assistant to the president at the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) of the Southern Baptist Convention in the area of prayer, revival, and spiritual awakening. He also served as special assistant to the presidents of the International Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources. He has provided leadership to thousands of pastors and laymen across North America and has spoken internationally in over ninety countries of the world. Henry lives with his wife, Marilynn, in Rex, Georgia. He has five children (Richard, Tom, Melvin, Norman, and Carrie), all of whom are serving in Christian ministry, and fourteen grandchildren. His long-range goal is to encourage revival and spiritual awakening in the United States, Canada, and across the world through speaking, praying, enlisting, writing, and mentoring.
