James Wright - A Master of Language

When I was a freshman in college, I was assigned to read James Wright's recently published volume, "The Branch Will Not Break", and to write a critical commentary on it. This was the first time I had to write an essay, instead of just answering a series of questions about a reading assignment. I don't remember my paper or how the teacher graded it, but I have never forgotten how I enjoyed that book of poetry. Furthermore, at the time James Wright was, like me, a resident of Minnesota! I thought at the time all poets belonged to the Dead Poets' Society, and it didn't occur to me some of them were not only alive, but living in my home state! This volume is a very generous selection of Wright's poetry and some of his wonderful translations as well. There is no introduction and no critical notes on the poems. However, there is a photograph on the back cover which is highly significant. The caption reads "James Wright with Robert Bly at Bly's farm, Madison, Minnesota, 1961". That caption is so moving to me: James Wright died very young, but his close friend, Robert Bly, is still alive, still a Minnesotan and still writing poetry. I cannot think of them apart from each other as poets and human beings. Just this past Oct. 16, 2013, I attended a reading by Robert Bly, celebrating his latest volume, "Stealing Sugar from the Castle". Bly is 88 years, obviously frail but still wielding his sharp wit and eloquent speech. James Wright was mentioned several times during the reading. Both Wright and Bly write what is sometimes called Deep Image poetry; this means their poems are informed by archetypal psychology. In recent years, Bly has collaborated with one of the leaders in that field, James Hillman. Had he survived, Wright would also be interacting with Hillman. Of course, archetypal psychology is informed by myths, but for the most parts, poets like Wright and Bly do not refer directly to mythic figures or tell mythic stories in their poems. Rather they trust their images come from the same unconscious sources as do myths, their images rise from those dark depths still drenched with archetypal material to be shaped into poetic language by the poet and interpreted by the astute reader. For example, Bly writes, "I have suffered and survived the night/Bathed in dark water like any blade of grass". And Wright writes, "There is this cave/In the air behind my body/That nobody is going to touch:a cloister a silence/Closing around a blossom of fire." Another poem presents a vivid and repellent image: "The black caterpillar/Crawls out, what with one thing/And another, across/The wet road./How lonely the dead must be." The image of a caterpillar is ordinary, we must cross paths unawares many times on a summer day. But placed prominently in a passage which mentions the dead, it takes on an unnerving sense of what's to come for the speaker. Of course, you can always say it's just a coincidence, but a Deep Image poem will lodge itself in your mind until you are ready to confront the archetype in a more direct way. One of my favorite Wright poems was inspired by traditional Chinese poetry with its long, informative title, "As I step over a puddle at the end of Winter, I think of an Ancient Chinese governor." Time and Space collapse before the poet's Powerful Words; at least, that is one way you can interpret it, if you choose to. The poem blurs the distinction between the governor and the poet; their identities merge: "Where is Minneapolis? I can see nothing/But the great terrible oak tree darken in the winter./Did you find the city of isolated men beyond mountains./Or have you been holding the end of a frayed rope/For a thousand years?" This closing passage illustrates Wright's command of language. With essentially ordinary words, without any special effects of characterization or setting, he creates a powerful scene of futility. It is a confrontation with things we fear most deeply, finally we can turn away no longer and we must face the fear. This superb use of language is one of Wright's most rewarding virtues.

Though to a certain degree James Wright was revered by critics, this collection reaffirms my opinion that he is the greatest of all the American contemporary poets of the mid-late 21st century poets.

Reviewing a Book of James Wright

I give 5 stars to this book for being visionary, sad, and natural. The poems are a delight. They are intellectual, but yet, easy to enjoy and fathom. I recommend this book to anyone who writes poetry. The book will make you rise to greater heights with your own poems.
