Can education be run as a profitable business and still be driven by a humanitarian vision? SABIS® shows the answer is yes. Now with 60 schools in 15 countries and over 60,000 students, SABIS® is a global education company committed to improving lives. The book is a journey through time - tracing the company from its humble origins in 1886 Mount Lebanon, through the civil war to the present day. It's also a journey through geographies, from Kurdistan to Katrina - from the first international schools in war-torn northern Iraq, to the first charter school to reopen after the hurricane devastated inner city New Orleans.

SABIS® goes where other educational providers are unwilling to tread, helping to rebuild lives shattered by war and natural disaster. It's finally a journey through the minds of committed educators, watching as they grapple with the fundamental question of how we educate young people in the virtues that have stood the test of time, whilst still enabling them to be prepared for a future of unknown possibilities.

A defiantly brilliant, effective, and unique view on education!
By George Saad
A great read! A story of love for education and of bold views on how to transform the entire education industry. It offers authentic remedies to a problem that has long been avoided - bringing the education sector into the private fold. If you are for the status-quo and for continuing to keep education decades behind the advancement of today's world, then this book will not sit well with you - but you will tremendously benefit from it (if you wish to). A must read for education wonks, for policy makers, for parents, for students, for teachers, and for anyone who believes in the next generation.

how SABIS Educates Poor Students Worldwide as a For-Profit Business!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Markets can't cater to the poor. Markets in education are motivated only by profits, not by concern for education. Private companies will work in education only by selecting the best students and ousting the others.

These are some of the common objections heard to markets in education. Just like he did in The Beautiful Tree: A Personal Journey Into How the World's Poorest People Are Educating Themselves, James Tooley gives us more evidence that calls some of these into question. Here, his focus is entirely on one global education company: SABIS International Schools Network. The SABIS company grew from a school founded in the late 19th century in Lebanon as a private girls school (when girls didn't generally go to school), SABIS gradually expanded into a brand of schools represented everywhere from Kurdistan and the United Arab Emirates to England and the US. And they tend to open in areas - like post-Katrina New Orleans - that caters to what most would call "at risk" (or at very least, poor) students.

Using a mix of interviews with central figures in the SABIS history, trips to various SABIS schools, and access to archives, Tooley tells us about the history, the pedagogical methods (which eschew many ideas at work in current public schools, like individualized instruction), and their results. SABIS students undergo, for instance, testing schedule that may well be more rigorous than in US public schools with one very key difference: the SABIS tests are formative, rather than summative: designed to really figure out what students are and aren't soaking up in order to figure out what instruction should come next. And with this and other methods, SABIS students have experienced marked success as measured by standardized tests...results that become more impressive when we factor in the student populations they tend to serve.

While Tooley documents SABIS successes, he also documents some of their failures, particularly some attempts to start charter schools in the US. Despite having a proven record of success in a range of locations, starting charter schools (schools that run privately, but receive public money as part of the public school system) often meet with fierce local and national opposition, often motivated by concern that private schools run by for-profit companies are not likely to offer a good quality education. SABIS however, remains steadfastly for-profit, and Tooley devotes a chapter to explaining why they made and make this choice, which largely has to do with the idea that not seeking profit limits their ability to grow as a company (similar to the arguments made in Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential (Civil Society: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives).

For me, the SABIS story fits in well with contemporary work on the idea of conscious capitalism (Be the Solution: How Entrepreneurs and Conscious Capitalists Can Solve All the Worlds Problems and markets that serve the poor and disenfranchised (The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits, Revised and Updated 5th Anniversary Edition. By seeking profit, SABIS turns what could be charity (or a clunky government enterprise) into a positive sum situation where they, do well by doing good for others. It is sustainable, it is proven effective, and it is innovative. Critics might wonder whether the SABIS model (in all its painstaking detail) is scalable and whether its very standardized approach to schooling avoids the problems of standardization within current public ed models. But anyone who wants to see what markets and for-profit companies are capable of in the are of education needs to read this.

From Village School to Global Brand
By John A. Bennett N.
James Tooley takes us back through time in a narrative that should remind us that human endeavor in general is born at an individual level; and if the endeavor is healthy it will persist through time through the dedication of individuals that share a common dream. This is the story of the SABIS adventure in education, and it is a story of success born through personal interest and commitment to serve others. It is also the story of real solidarity; for true solidarity can only exist at an individual or small community level, as opposed to the fallacious conception that education can prosper through political centralization. This is the tragedy of the commons and of failing education all over the world; to think that the responsibility of preparing our sons and daughters for their life adventure can be delegated to a government monopoly is a dangerous delusion, and all the evidence is there for all who want to see.
If we really want to understand where we all took the wrong path in the road of education, we must go back in time and review the real reasons that led us to a centralized system of schooling. How long and how much injury must our children and society in general bear before we understand that education is just another service that can and must be delivered by the market processes; for if society con not work at this level, can we really expect it to work at a centralized one?
And before I forget... The book is very well written and entertaining, as it takes you back through time and events that enthrall and remind us that great things can be birthed in the most humble of places. From Village School to Global Brand: Changing the World through Education
