Live Sent - really the only way to be "the church"

I recently received a copy of Live Sent - you are a letter to review for the Viral Bloggers program. I was struck by the message by the first chapter. It definitely has a Neil Cole, organic church feel to it, which I loved, but it really goes much more in depth than that. Jason Dukes challenges us to really change how we think about the words "church", "discipleship", and "evangelism." He really challenged me to rethink how I frame those words. Even though I would consider myself fairly progressive and emerging, it still really challenged me in my life. My wife was so excited to hear about it while I read it, that we read a few chapters out loud together to encourage each other.
This book really is a game changer for people. I have been looking for something like this to bridge a conversational void I have with many people. I think Jason puts his thinking in action and gives real direction on how to be neighborly, like Jesus, and missional. Not that he prescribes a recipe for success, but for me, a recipe for the confusing insanity that the Sunday driven "church" makes.
He helped me to make sense of much knowledge I already had between my ears and realize how to put in more into action. I would suggest this book to anyone who is desiring movement in their faith community, or who is really frustrated with the church as she exists. Jason Dukes gave me a reason to believe that we really can be the "church" without putting so much focus of being the church on Sunday morning for the "big show."

Everything is just ducky.

I've read most of the volumes in this series and am working backwards in ones I have not read. This book is, well, an odd duck. The writing is rather good, the illustrations are excellent, but the last three chapters seem to me to overlap considerably.

The book starts with a good intro and the first chapter is on natural history, including a bit of evolution and about how the taxonomy is still not fully resolved. This is a bit dryer than later chapters, but is worth a read to set those later chapters up. Chapter 2 cutely titled "The Free and the Pressed," is a good read, and includes quite diverse topics, including a variety of hunting techniques, duck migration, duck preservation (the federal Duck Stamp in the US, hunters supporting preservation of duck habitat and such). Duck decoys are discussed--those carved decoys used in the 19th century are now quite valuable as folk art, one going at a Southby's art auction for $700,000, and since the writing, now probably more. Decoy also refers to an interesting sort of entrapment apparatus once used by Dutch hunters. There's also a striking photo of two punt guns, enormous shotguns used by commercial hunters in the 1800s. This is the book's best chapter.

Chapter 3 is "The Duck's Quack," is unusual in that it discusses ducks in speech in several ways. One is how "quack" is rendered into a number of languages. Another is how the idea od "duck" is used in speech, enormously varied in different varieties of English, but phrases such as lame duck, sitting duck, the verb duck (as in "Duck! Incoming!") and so on. This chapter wanders around, and includes the ducking stool among other things.

Chapter 4 examines Donald Duck and ducks as toys, including some early modern automata, and contemporary artists who use Donald Duck as a vehicle to satirize society in various ways. Some interesting art works are illustrated. Chapter 5 and 6 overlap with this, bringing in widely ranging materials such as Vietnamese water puppetry, medical quacks, worries about migrating ducks carrying disease, and more. Don't get me wrong here, there's a lot of interesting material, but there doesn't seem to be much organization, and the book just sort of ends, which is why I rate it at 4 rather than 5 stars,

Reincarnation Explored in Fiction

This novel is a very good story and a very good read. Cleverly flashing backward and forward in time, the author widens our usual sequential narrow perspective of one life only- you are born, you die, one life and that's it! That is the "religious" view held by evangelical materialists and atheists but not by Hindus, Bhuddists, ancient Egyptians, the early Christians, some Jewish Rabbis, Pythagoras and probably Plato and many others. The last forty years of near death and shared death experience literature points to the survival of consciousness and its primacy rather than the materialist view as consciousness being an "epiphenomenon" of neural activity.

Littman touches on the important issue of very young children talking about past lives. In a predominantly Judeo-Christian culture, people are just not receptive to this or discourage such momories. This is in contrast to Hindu and Bhuddist cultures where it is widely accepted. The life work of Ian Stevenson, MD and his successors provide detailed evidence strongly suggesting the validity of reincarnation.

Material attachments and the "Law of Karma" go hand in hand with reincarnation. "As you sow, so you shall reap." Max/Bob, being a good man, loves but cannot have Sophia/Sophie in one life but becomes her husband in the next. The self-centered and troubled Gershon/ Patrick has his way but hardly understands that being a scoundrel will also receive its just due.

The book's characters understanding of karma/reincarnation is necessarily limited in this novel and readers will need to draw their own conclusions. Nonetheless, The Rebirth of Gershon Polokov is an important novel to help make people more aware of this very important topic! To quote Saint Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa: It is absolutely necessary that the soul shall be healed and purified, and if it doesn't take place in one life on earth, it must be accomplished in future earthly lives."

The idea of metempsychosis (the posthumous transmigration of souls into new bodies) began with
the Greeks. Currently, stories that deal with this phenomenon are categorized as paranormal.
James Joyce and Plato (both believers in metempsychosis) would enthusiastically welcome Mindy
Littman Holland’s treatment of the passage of a soul to another physical body if they were around
today.

We first meet Sophie Gordon as a three-year-old in the 1950s in a grocery store in the Bronx who
is given a gold locket in the shape of a heart by a stranger only she can see. We follow her life from
there through two marriages besides taking a sidetrip to New York in 1910 to understand how the
seeds were planted for the transmigration of two lovers' souls.
I was intrigued by Ms. Holland's choice of a simple narrative style to tell a story that deals with the
complexities of the human psyche. She doesn’t reveal the souls of her characters by overwhelming
readers with philosophical and psychological discourses. Holland’s reliance on humor to make us
laugh at family dysfunction serves the novel well. Sophie's mother, Roma Gordon, is practical to
the point of being a caricature of motherhood while her father is a doting husband and daddy who
just doesn't get it.

It's a long hard road Sophie and her beloved, Gershon, travel to find each other. I enjoyed
traveling it with them, especially with Holland’s guidance. It's a fun read on a subject matter that is
often misunderstood. The point the story makes well is that whether you believe in

Great summer read!

An absolute delight! Prepare to be transported as Ms. Holland weaves a story of family, destiny and reincarnation that spans nearly a century from the 1910 immigrant stepping off the boat in his banana yellow suit to the 1950`s tenement house of New York and, finally, to the 1980's. Ms. Holland's characteristic humor is spot-on but there is a serious side to the book that addresses family interaction and a connectivity to the past that proves inescapable.

About the Author

Sandeep Nema Ph.D. is Executive Director, Pharmaceutical R&D, BioTherapeutics Pharmaceutical Sciences at Pfizer in St. Louis. Since graduating in 1992 with his doctorate, Dr. Nema has been involved with the development of small molecule and protein drugs via parenteral delivery, first at Mallinckrodt Medical and then at Pfizer (Searle, Pharmacia), and has led the formulation of four launched products. He is active in the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), where he has chaired several meetings and focus groups. Dr. Nema holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the University of Tennessee.

John D. Ludwig Ph.D. is Vice President, Business Strategy, Operations, and Clinical Supply Planning, BioTherapeutics Pharmaceutical Sciences at Pfizer, and Site Director for the company’s St. Louis Laboratories. Dr. Ludwig received a B.S. degree in Pharmacy and Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of Tennessee, Memphis and has held numerous research and development positions at Burroughs Wellcome Co, Searle, Inc., Pharmacia, Inc., and Pfizer. He is active in the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Training and Research Institute, where he has contributed to developing professional training courses and has regularly served as an instructor.

Sex Trafficking in the US

This was a good book to read if you want to learn more about what is going on regarding human trafficking in the US. It mainly covers what goes on in massage parlors and undercover investigations regarding it. There are a few short interviews done with various people as well. You'll also learn about stuff that goes on in other countries, but not too much in comparison to what is covered in the US. I think the reason why this book didn't get more stars in its rating from me is because I've read about 40 human trafficking books and there are quotes from some of the other books I've read. No matter what, the fact that it seems to go on each day in each neighborhood, hopefully will wake up people to wanting to stop it and to know that "normal" men are willing to harm other people, while there are other men who are lost and don't realize who these women are that they are abusing (and they won't even understand that it is abuse).

I didn't watch the DVD portion, but I think it is awesome that they have a study portion included with this!!! I think if you are just starting to learn about human trafficking, this is a good book to read. I enjoyed much of it!!! Let's go bring slavery to an end!

In "Not in My Town," Dillon Burroughs and Charles Powell share graphic stories of the victims of human trafficking and modern day slavery that are heart-wrenching. Everyone needs to read this book, see the video, share it with someone else, and choose at least one of the suggested ways to help fight human trafficking.

Trafficking is everywhere....yes, in your area too. Do not be ignorant. Read and become aware of what is happening and what to do concerning it. This would be a great high school book as well as book study for adults and churches. Become aware of a catastrophic sin which is not discussed. This riveting book begins with the cover and does not cease until the book is finished.

About the Author
Richard Everett began his career in 1970. He was a professional actor for ten years making regular appearances on TV, in the theatre, and in films.

In the late 70’s he went on to form his own fringe theatre company. Working with David Wickert, he financed and built The Upstream Theatre in London (opposite the Young Vic) and was Artistic Director there for 3 years.

In the 80’s Richard turned to writing. He is the author of eight produced stage plays including Happy Event, Close To The Wind, Hand Over Fist and Present From The Past which have been published, translated into several languages, and are regularly performed in the UK and abroad. His latest play Demons had its world premiere in Heidelberg in 2009 and is scheduled for production in the UK in 2010.
