Good daily devotional

While I have only read a few weeks of these devotions, as the book is new (Nov 2011), I am getting a positive feel for the way the devotionals are written. They are Bible based and solidly done. They provide new ways of looking at ancient truths and ways to apply that truth to today's situations and life. I find this book a helpful devotional to start off my day. I look forward to spending the next year with this book.

This devotional is very informative and thought provoking. My wife and I use it as a main component of our evening devotions, and we both enjoy it very much. I believe this same author, Dillon Burroughs, has just recently released a second devotional titled "Hunger No More". We are looking forward to starting on it the first of next year.

As a proven leader, he offers a study in leadership in his book, The Nehemiah Factor: 16 Characteristics of a Missional Leader. The book is published by New Hope Publishers.

Using the biblical character, Nehemiah, as a model, Page identifies qualities which a leader should possess and develop. It is intended for leaders who are "missional." He defines this term:

Missional is the buzzword in evangelical circles today...It is a way of looking at Christianity that integrates concern for both evangelism and social ministries. It is a kind of acting out of the faith in daily life. The word encompasses much of what Christians have simply thought of in the past as living out the Christ life.

Each chapter presents one characteristic from the life of Nehemiah and his project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem in difficult times. Each chapter title begins, A Missional Leader with the following traits.

1. Is a Person of Godly Character
2. Is a Person of Calling
3. Is a Person of Vision
4. Is a Person of Christlike Concern
5. Is a Person of Spiritual Fruitfulness
6. Is a Person Who is a Team Worker
7. Is a Person of Prayer
8. Is a Person of Integrity
9. Is a Person of Comprehension
10. Is an Excellent Conflict Manager
11. Is a Person of Courage
12. Is a Person of Commitment
13. Is a Person of Communication
14. Is a Great Time Manager
15. Is Willing to Provide Accountability
16. Is a Person Who Celebrates Victory

The book is profitable to readers who desire to have more Christian influence in their worlds. Each reader should evaluate the strength of each characteristic in his or her life. Weaknesses should be targeted for improvement. The result will be leading others as Nehemiah did in accomplishing great things for God's kingdom.

The book is written in a folksy manner with plenty of anecdotes. This method means that this book is a starting point for leadership studies. One will have to read elsewhere to dig deeper.

A major deficiency in the book is Page's critical comments about reformed theology or Calvinism. The first chapter is titled, "A Missional Leader Is a Person of Godly Character." However much of the chapter was spent attacking Calvinism. I still am not sure why this was relevant to the chapter title. It seems that Page forgot that this was not one of his previous books, Trouble with the TULIP.

"Nehemiah Factor" by Frank Paige

Over the past several years, I have grown to appreciate and respect Dr. Frank Page. His election to the office of President of the Southern Baptist Convention was controversial (due to his Arminian theology) yet he managed to serve as President without deepening the divide and estranging the various theological differences within the Convention. Though I might disagree with Page on a number of issues, I have found him most concerned with the gospel and served, and continues to serve, to bring God the glory through the redemption of fallen sinners.

I was looking forward to reading his newest book, "The Nehemiah Factor: 16 Characteristics of a Missional Leader," as this was the first book I have read by him. The word missional is becoming a bit of a buzz word these days. It seems like everybody is using it. Page describes the word as involves "a way of looking at Christianity that integrates concern for both evangelism and social ministries. It is a kind of acting out of the faith in daily life. The word encompasses much of what Christian have simply thought of in the past as living out the Christian life." (19)

The point of the missional movement is the realization that Christians are not only to believe the right things, but do the right things. Christianity is both a noun and a verb and we have a responsibly to fulfill both. That is the real advantage of reading someone like Paige talk about being missional. Some emphasize the verb aspect and ignore the noun, whereas some emphasize the noun aspect and ignore the verb. Paige seeks to balance both.

His book is primarily (as the subtitle suggests) about what a missional leader looks like. There are 16 chapters that lay out 16 characteristics of the missional leader. These characteristics include: godly character, called, Christlike, prayer warrior (my words) a team worker, has integrity, able to manage conflict, courageous, committed, and accountable, just to name a few.

The book centers around the Old Testament character of Nehemiah who helps the Jews return to their homeland with the permission of the Persians after spending 70 years in captivity under Babylon. Paige sees Nehemiah as an excellent example of what it means to be a missional leader.

The book overall is fairly straightforward. The author offers a number personal stories and experiences mixed with Biblical exegesis from Nehemiah and other biblical texts, and applies them directly to the reader. Each characteristics serve as "must-haves" for the missional leader. If we want to be faithful to Christ, the Great Commission, the church, to the lost, and to each other, we must have these characteristics.

As a pastor, I found this book helpful for he is primarily speaking to persons like myself. Am I accountable? Am I courageous? Am I committed? How do I handle conflict? How to I manage my time? Throughout the book I felt as if the author was writing directly to me and kicking me in the gut. Paige reminded me that I have a lot to learn.

So to answer the question, would I recommend this book, and to who? I would say yes. I would recommend this book because it is practical, yet faithful to Scripture. Pastors need to heed his words, church leaders need his insight, and church members need to realize their call to be as missional as their spiritual leaders. This book can be read by anybody with the realization that Page is a pastor writing about leadership. We are all to be missional, but not all of us have leadership roles.

But there are a few areas of concern I had regarding this book. The first concern regards a distraction. I said at the beginning that Page managed to cool the fires over the debate between Calvinism and Arminianism as President of the Convention, but in this book, he just couldn't resist the bait. Early on, Page raises the issues of election and limited atonement and clearly comes down on the Arminian side. I have no problem with that (though I may disagree), but I felt that it distracted from the point he was trying to make. Did he really need to raise the issue? I fear that many (regardless of where they fall on the debate) will be distracted by him raising this issue in this book. Some will close the book and walk away needlessly, while others will simply count Paige as one of their own. One can be missional, and must be missional, regardless of what one believes about predestination or the extent of the atonement.

Another problem I had was the small amount of space in each chapter dedicated to Nehemiah. From the books title (which I like), I was under the impression that the majority of the book would be about Nehemiah. I thought the author would spend the majority of his time discussing the context, the background, the characters, the significance of various events, etc. from Nehemiah. Instead, the author would quote the book and then briefly explain what was happening and then use it as a launch pad into his discussions. It was great that he revealed the uniformity of Scripture, but I wish the "Nehemiah Factor" had more to say about Nehemiah.

Overall, this is a wonderful book. It is simple, straightforward, and honest. Page has been there before. Page has experienced the life of a missional leader and has the authority to speak on these issues. It is nice to see someone promoting missional ministry without compromising the gospel. The question is, will be be missional leaders, or will we simply put this book back on our shelf?

"The Nehemiah Factor" by Dr. Frank Page

The Nehemiah Factor: 16 Characteristics of a Missional Leader, by Dr. Frank Page, is what one might consider an extended response to the question- "Can revival come through truly missional leaders of genuine faith?"

In the book, Dr. Page uses sixteen chapters to set forth what he believes to be the sixteen qualities of a missional leader. Some of the qualities of the missional leader are God-given and God cultivated- meaning that the missional leader must employ and make use of the gifts that God has given to him or her. Other qualities stem from walking in close relationship and obedience to God. Such qualities are manifested as one grows and matures in their relationship to Christ. Still other qualities, however, are ones that can be cultivated through study, effort, attentiveness, and practice.

What I most appreciated about this book was the fact that Dr. Page recognized the interplay between the qualities that have been given us, that are cultivated as we walk with Christ, and those that are learned or refined through effort and/or practice. Such an understanding does not come easy. Yet, it does reflect the fact that God has created each and every one of us uniquely, while at the same time acknowledging that some aspects of leadership can be learned and cultivated even if we are not naturally disposed to be great or competent in such areas.

That said, I found the book over all to be a difficult read. The book had a rather folksy and pop-leadership quality to it. Page would make a point, often in a short paragraph, and then spend a number of pages giving weak anecdote after weak anecdote to illustrate his point. At other junctures (such as chapters 1 and 2), Dr. Page seems to forget that he is writing a book about leadership rather than a book about predestination and free-will.

Finally, I found the title, The Nehemiah Factor, to be misleading. While Page does reference Nehemiah, his various leadership qualities, and some of the lessons that we can extrapolate from the life of this leader- I felt that the book had very little to do with Nehemiah and the leadership that he provided. Instead, Page made his points, used a plethora of stories, and then sprinkled in a few pieces of Nehemiah's story to give the title validity.

Over all, the book was a mediocre attempt to enter the discussion of what it means and what is required for one to be a missional leader. It is worth taking the time to read, but given the sheer volume of quality books on the subject of leadership in general, and missional leadership in particular, this would not be my first choice or recommendation on the subject.

Laughed and Cried

I knew that Rhonda Rhea was a very funny lady before I bought this book. I expected to laugh. I didn't expect to drop tears on some of the pages, but that is what happend. Thankfully, the book is printed with a high quality paper and the words didn't smear. I don't care how long you've been a believer, Rhonda's words will give you a gentle kick in the pants to stop hiding in darkness. Very good stuff!

Another Rhonda Rhea Winner!

I've been reading Rhonda's work (books and articles) since early 2004 and have absolutely NO DOUBT that her latest endeavor, "How Many Lightbulbs Does It Take To Change A Person?" will be as informative and entertaining as her other works. Always biblically based with a generous dose of humor, her writing teaches as well as entertains. I'm looking forward to reading this one once it's released tomorrow!

I've finished reading this book and I can say I was not at all disappointed! This book differs from most of Rhonda's other books; this one is filled with scripture references to uplift and give hope. Rhonda's previous works were very lighthearted and funny--quick reads. Not so with "How Many Lightbulbs...". This book is one to read a bit and chew on, like savoring fine chocolate. Still filled with Rhonda's unmistakable humor, Rhonda uses scripture to reveal applications to integrate God's Word into the very depths of our everyday lives, no matter what the circumstances.
I found this book to be well-written, well-documented and worthy of my reference shelf. It already has marks on some of the pages of passages that are especially relevant to me.
If you are truly seeking direction and want to grow in your walk with God, this book is a must-have for you.

Very Enlightening!

There are nearly 300 references to light in the Bible, and Rhonda Rhea uses many of these to point the reader to the light of Jesus Christ. How Many Lightbulbs Does It Take To Change A Person?: Bright Ideas For A Delightful Transformation is a wonderful read for the darker days of Winter. Rhonda's delightful sense of humor as she shares both personal stories and enlightening Scripture brings many rays of hope and encouragement. By pointing the way to Christ, the true Light-Bearer, we learn to how He can transform our lives. In turn, by letting Christ shine in us, we make help to make a difference in the lives of others.

The book is divided into 5 different sections, and has a total of 25 chapters. Small group discussion questions are also included at the end of the book. By reading and studying this with others, it will also shed more light on ways to apply this to your life and be transformed. All living things need LIGHT if they are going to GROW!! This is a very good book and I believe it will brighten your week to spend some time reading it.
