Considering the Self

Linda Brierty has written an impressively thorough series of probing questions in The Self-Inquiry Process, a workbook that speaks to the wide spectrum of human experience, and suffering. The workbook offers an accessible guide to everyone, written with clear language that helps readers forge through complex psychological conditions. The book's goal, as editor Vanessa Caskey writes, is to "guide us through an investigation of the blocks and obscurations keeping us from living in harmony with our true nature...The idea is to identify and break down these defensive obscurations, at the behavioral, emotional and cognitive levels, so that we can be in touch with our pure being and live from the self, rather than be enslaved by the defensive self we have built out of fear and pain."

More than being just one more self-help book that crowds bookstore shelves, The Self-Inquiry Process is the most interactive book in this genre I have seen. Rather than merely espousing her own obviously rich and deep wisdom, Brierty translates her gift for therapeutic healing into questions, so readers do not get away with simply absorbing wisdom (or letting it slide through one's mind without rooting as the case may be!) Instead, book users/readers are pushed to discover their personal truths through startlingly intelligent questions that point directly to places inside of us that are often kept secret or dimmed.

More than 200 pages, the book is not just a short-term exercise; rather it promises a lifetime of self-examination work. The questions range from asking about how you communicate with different types of people to more philosophical questions, such as, "What is the difference between surrender and giving up?" Or, "resignation and letting go," "complacency and letting be," and "loneliness and solitude."

The book is challenging, and my technique was to handle it small section at a time. Readers can flip through the book or go about diligently processing it from beginning to end. It can be read backwards and forward and it holds nuggets of wisdom throughout, which, if you are feeling lazy, are delightful to read at any time. The questions often inspired me to respond with drawings or paintings because words sometimes came up short. And I was helped by the glossary of technical and "psycho-spiritual terms," and Brierty's informative words on core emotions, love and attachment, and the relationships we have with time, love, money and reality.

While the book should not supplant therapy, it can augment whatever professional help a reader is undergoing or be called upon during difficult times. I also think that the book, while encouraging solitary reflection, can be shared with a loved one to lead to greater understanding of each other.

I also appreciated the author's firm and kind guidance found throughout the book. She insists that the workbook be used with compassion. Rather than berate oneself - which it is easy to do because the questions require such intense examination - she asks that all the questions be approached with warmth.

There is something in this book for everyone, for the whole spectrum of personalities and problems and pain, and in the process, you will strengthen the dialogue you have with yourself to transform it into one that can guide you to healing.

I love this book!!! The probing and insightful questions helped me uncover my deep rooted feelings and patterns of behavior. By the end, I had gained a much better understanding of myself and feel that I have stronger relationships with others. I have read a number of self-help books and this is by far my favorite!

EXCELLENT INSIGHT

Can't say enough about Margaret Barker 's work. A refreshing break from an overly conservative view of scripture and early Christianity. The temple can be found everywhere in both the Old and New Testaments. Most of scripture continues to be misunderstood as we view it through modern eyes and modern culture. If you closely you will see that most of the Bible is ritual-based. And most of those rituals are from the temple. Barker does a great job of pulling back the veil and revealing the temple in scripture.

I highly recommend this work for those LDS readers who enjoyed the writings of Hugh Nibley. Barker sweeps the dust off of biblical and apocryphal writings to reveal a rich spiritual world that filled with Christ-centered teachings. Her theories will challenge some traditional Christians who believe that Israelites were strict monotheists. But BArker's works are so thought-provoking, they should not be missed.

Excellent!

This compelling book is about two extraordinary women: its subject, Ona Simaite, a librarian who quietly and heroically assisted the people in the wartime ghetto of Vilnius, and its author, Julija Sukys, who follows the trail of her heroine through Lithuania and France while painstakingly extracting telling entries from mountains of letters and diaries. In the case of Simaite it is a story of both exceptional bravery and quotidian activities. In the case of Sukys it is the quite personal story of first discovering, and then writing, the ordinary yet remarkable life of her countryman and fellow epistophile. Excellent!

An important contribution to modern Lithuanian history

Julija Sukys thoughtfully illuminates the life of Ona Simaite, an important, interesting, and complex woman. Sukys examines the many letters Simate wrote throughout her lifetime and intersperses these with careful historical research and insightful analysis. Sukys places herself gracefully into the research process--her personal observations do much to make this an easily readable and thought-provoking book.

Civil War in Revolutionary SE North Carolina--Honestly Depicted

Dunkerly deserves great credit for undertaking this book and for pursuing his research on it despite snakes and spiders and swamps, the sort of hazards that to most writers are merely metaphorical--that snake of a collector who will not share, that spider darting out with venomous criticism, that swamp full of agenda-driven reviewers. Dunkerly "tried to track down primary sources (diaries, military reports, newspapers, journals, receipts) and walk the ground where events occurred." He took footwork literally: "I drove hundreds of miles, walked miles of old roads, drove to obscure battle sites, and walked many city streets." He would agree passionately with what I call in MELVILLE BIOGRAPHY "The Footsteps Theory of Biography." More than that, he is plainly the sort of decent, open man who makes friends with others who are passionate about his subject. And be grateful: this is a book that might have been impossible to write in another decade, when more good local authorities are dead and when more historic sites have been paved over. Anyone interested in Revolutionary history has to be grateful to Dunkerly.

Raising the matter of terminology, Whig, Loyalist, Patriots, Dunkerly says "Literature often refers to the two groups as Patriots and Tories; however, I prefer the terms Whig and Loyalist, to remove any negative connotations or sense of moral superiority." This decision is to impose half-hearted Political Correctness onto historicity. Mel Gibson may have ruined "Patriot" for the present generation of historians and the next, too, but in fact "patriot" is not the historically correct term for the rebels. The great search engine of the Will Graves-C. Leon Harris SCAR transcriptions of pension applications under the law of 1832 shows 358 occurrences of "patriot," many of them editorial. It shows 121 occurrences of "loyalist," many of them editorial. It shows 781 occurrences of "Whig" and 4615 occurrences of "Tory." Pretty clearly, the historically correct thing to do is use Whig and Tory, neither of which has negative connotations to the average reader today. Then, a helpful friend might have marked through many an "unfortunately" or "fortunately" in the interests of not pushing one connotation or another and have removed "charismatic" from the name of David Fanning. Is it the splendid red coat that charms so many people who write about this psychotic murderer?

Have I missed the list of Illustrations? The illustrations are in fact very useful, but I am making my own list of them. I am also having great trouble with looking up footnotes. There are very helpful running heads showing what chapters the notes go with but when I want to know the source of something in quotations marks I often get two or more possibilities after the fn number. So far, this is very frustrating.
I have started looking at the 1832 pension applications of men who rode out against David Fanning and the Tories (never loyalists!)--some 400 of them in the Graves-Harris transcriptions, and am surprised at how few of them Dunkerly uses--three dozen? I'll count again.

When I get farther along in seeing how much (or how little) can be learned from the pension applications that Dunkerly does not already have, I am going to add to this review. My quibbles are not enough to knock down the ranking to 4 stars. What a useful book!

Whatever else I learn, this is a book to be cherished. So few people write books this valuable to people who are trying to make sense of a neglected segment of history. For months I have been in a Deep River and a Raftless Swamp, ranging and now and then skirmishing. Dunkerly pulls me up to dry land (even if there is a strip mall right there by us).

Outstanding book!!!

I enjoyed this book very much! I was familiar with bits and pieces of Rev War history in Eastern NC but this really gives the reader a very good understanding of what happened during this time period! The author also explains where these events took place in relation to modern locations as well as their current condition (provided they still exist).
I can recommend this to anyone interested in the Rev War as it relates to Eastern NC!!

Altered Living

I recently discovered this author and love her in depth Bible Study, her questions to the reader and her 'new perspective' or 'slant' of giving yourself to the Lord--fully surrendered to Him in all ways. This book will make you think. Good instruction, good biblically and a real blessing. This book is a must read even for the spiritually mature in Christ.

Life Unhindered

When I first picked up Life Unhindered and saw that the first chapter is called `A Cloud of Witness', my heart skipped a beat. The cloud of witnesses is mentioned in Hebrews 12: 1-2 and that is among my favorite verses of scripture. I have always found great comfort from it, but I just never really thought of the intense freedom that comes from doing just that: "throw aside every hindrance". In Life Unhindered, Jennifer Kennedy Dean explores Hebrews 12: 1-2 in order to help readers find true freedom in Christ.

Having worked through one of Jennifer's Bible studies already, I knew what to expect from her writing style. She lays out a very in depth study of Hebrews in this book, sometimes a little too deep for my liking. I have always struggled when authors do such thorough studies of scripture. I preferred Jennifer's speaking from her heart and sharing personal stories of people she knows. When she writes from the heart, she has a very comforting and soothing tone and takes on the feeling of chatting with a good friend.

Life Unhindered is a good mix of in depth Bible study and personal Christian self-help for healing. I did very much enjoy this book and I found it very useful. Hebrews 12 is a wonderful passage to turn to for guidance and Jennifer has written a practical guide to apply Hebrews to our lives.

Inspiring Study on Living Truly Free

Prayer is certainly important part of Jennifer Kennedy Dean. It must be, considering that she is the author of Live a Praying Life (among others) and the Executive Director of The Praying Life Foundation. With this new book, this respected author and speaker is adept at Bible study as well.

In Life Unhindered Dean studies in depth Hebrews 12:1-2:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Dividing the scripture into its phrasal parts, she develops (as promised by the subtitle) five keys to being set free to live an unhindered life:

1. His Platform (focusing on the previous chapter in Hebrews in response to the mention of the "cloud of witnesses" to which the "therefore" refers).
2. His Provision - how Christ empowers His followers to rid themselves of entangling sin.
3. His Power - the strength that He gives to run the race of Life.
4. His Presence - reminding readers that Christ dwells with and in us.
5. His Promise - finding the freeing release of the promises that are embodied in the Word of God.

The book itself is an inspiring reminder of how God wants us to live our lives free of the struggle with sin in which all of us find ourselves. Dean takes great care to handle Scripture wisely, and her attention to research is evident in the writing. The book includes the chapter-ending questions for thought that have become so popular in works such as this one, as well as a leader's guide attached as an appendix in case someone might desire to use this book as a group study. I would suggest that the reader--whether as an individual or as part of a group--keep a copy of the Scriptures handy as Dean takes you on a tour of the Bible in her effort to unify the study.

There is a drawback to this kind of study, though, and one that many preachers often run into in the course of preparing sermons that remain true to the Scripture. And that danger is working overtime to break down the Bible verses being studied. To compound this sin (that sometimes cheapens rather than deepens what we can learn from the Bible), Dean decided to alliterate her points--which is another trap into which preachers fall.

That said, the opening chapters (which focus on the "cloud of witnesses") may be the most valuable part of the study--and worth the purchase price of the book. I would recommend this study with four out of five reading glasses.

Very entertaining

Funny. Very funny in places. A classic farce.
The roots of this play lie in Commedia del arte, as it is a reworking of Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters. Set in modern England of the Beatles era, it is easy to identify the characters with their Commedia counterparts, but it all works in the new setting and with the corresponding vernacular.

First produced by the National Theatre in 2011 and in NYC in 2012.

About the Author

Vaishãli is a life-management expert, a spiritual teacher, an international speaker and educator, and syndicated radio show host. She has healed herself from terminal illness twice without Western medicine, prescription drugs, or surgeries. A Guidebook to Life that was not given to us

This is a book, the reading of which left a trail of fragrance that lasted over a week. I felt blessed for having read it.

In this book, the author dwells, in greater detail, on the basic philosophy behind her earlier books "You are what you Love" and "Wisdom Rising I".

As in Wisdom Rising I. she presents a prescription for living under the three headings of Mind, Body and Spirit. Therein, she talks of creating a life, where the ego has been sufficiently chastened, and lightness and laughter replace routine imposed heaviness and boredom. A life embodied by the immortal words of the Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore

"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not broken into fragments by narrow domestic walls
Where words come out of the depth of truth...."

In the Mind section, Vaishali gives specific prescriptions for the all too well-known problems on relationship, money and health. She illustrates her points with incidents from her own life, (a life that has had more than its fair share of trials and tribulations), with cartoons at the beginning of each chapter and also with some tabloid characters, Bugs Bunny among them. There is a chapter that provides very practical tips on how to handle sociopaths without going into "victim" consciousness. About economic problems, Vaishali shows how to deal with them in funny and joyful ways, precluding a return to a "scarcity" mindset.

As per health problems, Vaishali emphasizes the need to love one's body and the necessity to abandon the tenet of "one size fits all". This is how she makes incursions into the Eastern medicinal traditions of Ayurveda which characterizes people into three main groups and treats maladies from the standpoint of their basic constitution.

The last section on Spirituality is especially readable. Drawing from the works of the Swedish mystic, Emmanuel Swedenborg, whose major dictum as Vaishali sees it, is "You are what you love", she shows that spirituality ultimately boils down to a specific choice that one exercises every moment of one's life, a choice of love over fear.

In this book, Vaishali also counters "doomsday " predictions around the end date of the Mayan calendar with a strong anchoring in the Now. This input forms part of an interview with Kathryn Brinkley, editor of "Kinetics Magazine" which is also featured in the text.

This book was for me, a joy to read and a very fast one as well. The text flows fast, the ideas topple themselves pell mell into your head and their originality feels like cool, soothing showers on a hot, sunny day. This book has transformational power, Vaishali has gone through many vicissitudes in her life and she has used them as stepping stones to a future where she helps many others go through their own challenges, one at a time.

Laughter and enlightenment

Seriously! Ever since I discovered Vaishali on a talk radio show (she now hosts several internet shows on CTR), I've been a fan. After decades of minor and major involvement in a variety of spiritual and Eastern studies, I find Vaishali the most comprehensive and comforting voice to listen to (and read) while stumbling through the classroom of life.

In this book (her fourth), she mixes intelligence with humor, deep thought with serious and wonderfully wacky stories and even some hilarious cartoons. Who else would quote Groucho Marx and Lenny Bruce in a book about wisdom? Sentences like "When life presents an opportunity disguised as a setback, reach around the illusion and seize the day" stop me in my tracks. Just that simple. Just that challenging and thought-provoking. You'll want to read all of her books, trust me. I often just open one of her books to a random page and read, kind of an I Ching approach. She has an amazing grasp on how to live a spiritual life, be in the here and now on the planet ("the rock"), and have fun with both. AND she can articulate it. No small feat. She's had her share of crap and serious health issues she's learned to self-correct and grow beyond, and shares her methods and insights. Anyone can benefit from this book.

Witty Perspectives on Mind Body Spirit

If you're looking for flowing linen robes, incense and nebulous phrases about love, don't buy this book.

Vaishali is not just out-of-the-box, she's probably pushing the envelope in this dimension. The book is more or less a continuation of the format of Wisdom Rising, where she gives unique perspectives on spirituality using situations most people would not even consider as having relevance.

The book is divided into sections on Mind, Body & Spirit, with each one focusing on that particular aspect of the human experience. As in Wisdom Rising, each section has a unique cartoon which I found hysterical, but also perfectly summed up the gist of the chapter. Each chapter is "stand alone" so you can put the book down, and if no one steals it, pick it up and start wherever you left off.

Well worth it. 5 Stars on content, 5 Stars on relevance to daily life, and 5 Stars on wit and humor. Hey, a book with just the cartoon illustrations in it would be 5 Stars!

About the Author
Mark Russell has a PhD in intercultural studies from Asbury Theological Seminary, a master of divinity degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and a bachelor of science degree in international business from Auburn University. His doctoral dissertation focused on business as mission (BAM). Mark has gained tremendous international understanding in his time living and working in Russia, Chile and Germany and in his extensive travel to more than 70 countries to carry out a variety of business, educational, humanitarian and religious projects. Mark has been published in more than 50 academic and popular level publications. Mark lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife, Laurie and their children, Noah and Anastasia.

An Excellent Introduction to Business as Mission

Some time ago, I started a business consulting practice with the idea that I could use my "business" income to support my "ministry" activities. My plan was to imitate Paul and his use of tentmaking to "pay the bills." However, I found that separating my work and ministry activities was quite challenging and I longed for a more integrated life where everything I did was ministry. But how?

I find Mark Russell's book, "The Missional Entrepreneur: Principles and Practices for Business as Mission," to be excellent input for my journey into the world of "business as mission" (BAM). Based on Russell's doctoral work at Asbury Theological Seminary, the book is structured into five parts: 1) Fundamentals, 2) Learning from the Apostle Paul, 3) Motivations and Mind-Set, 4) Best Practices, and 5) Special Topics. Russell has traveled extensively and is able to draw upon both first hand experience and direct field research to provide numerous valuable insights into what it takes to succeed in BAM.

Part 1: Fundamentals is a fine introduction, but it's parts 2 and 3 that really set this book apart.

In Part 2: Learning from the Apostle Paul, Russell provides an in depth look into Paul's context, the nature of his work and the rationale behind why he was a tentmaker. After reading these chapters, I've come to realize that my understanding of Paul was inadequate (which certainly won't be the last time that happens). I had a vision for what I call "tentmaking 1.0" that separated "business" and "ministry" into two different spheres. But Russell does an excellent job of demonstrating how integral tentmaking was in Paul's ministry. It not only provided him a degree of economic independence, it also provided him access to people and a context for witness that were integral to his ministry. Paul's witness was not just what he said, or how he moved in power, but in how he conducted his business, openly in the marketplace for all to see. Paul was practicing what you might call tentmaking 2.0, where his tentmaking was part and parcel with his ministry.

In Part 3: Motivations and Mind-Set, Russell starts by examining parallels between today's BAM efforts and current and past mission trends. He then examines different motivations and mindsets for BAM before diving into a "composite" case study that compares two models of BAM, drawing upon his fieldwork in Thailand where he conducted 128 interviews across 12 BAM enterprises. I found this section to be invaluable. Russell found a marked difference between those whose motivation was to bless the local population in the name of Jesus and those whose primary goal was to convert them to Christianity. This difference in mindset had striking implications. "Converters" tended to work undercover and stay aloof from local Christians and exhibited low cultural adaptation. "Blessers" worked openly (since there are few, if any, countries where simply being a Christian is forbidden, while there are many where conversion is outlawed), tended to partner frequently with local churches and exhibited high cultural adaptation. Not surprisingly, the "blessers" were generally happier (as were their employees) and more successful in business, but most importantly, the fruit of the activities was also dramatically different. Those enterprises focused on blessing saw 40x more people become followers of Christ. Russell is clear that his study was specific to one culture, at one moment in time, but I think anyone contemplating how to integrate their business skills into ministry will find this section to be thought provoking and worthy of study and prayer.

In Part 4: Best Practices, Russell discusses a variety of business and mission related issues including the value of planning and vision, the challenge of understanding and navigating foreign cultures, and issues of competition. Chapter 5: Special Topics examines issues around leadership and offshoring.

This was an excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in BAM. It makes a good complement to Neal Johnson's new book "Business as mission a comprehensive guide to theory and practice." While Johnson's book is more like an academic survey of the literature, "The Missional Entrepreneur," with its exegesis of Paul's tentmaking and its case studies, is more readable and enjoyable as it captures Russell's own journey to understand just what BAM is, and should be, in a clear narrative style. The result is an insightful book that is well worth reading by anyone with heart for business as mission.

Must Read for BAM

The apostle Paul is a complex person who is often difficult to understand. Many Christians find him the model missionary and evangelical. He was a tentmaker by trade and continued his occupation during most of his missionary journeys. At times, Paul worked numerous hours so as not to be a burden on those to whom he was teaching (I Thessalonians 2:9). The gospel spread through much of the world because of the direct work of Paul and the many seeds he planted.

The author uses the life of Paul to help readers understand Business as Missions (BAM). A clear case is made that both missions and business are meant to coexist and this mixture is effective in the long run. A missional entrepreneur is someone who starts a business to fulfill his/her part of God's plan for the world. A holistic view is offered for the enhancement of the big picture of a Christian's role in this world.

The author presents research on the best and worst practices in BAM. An often discussed issue is the difference between making disciples and converts. The book is demonstrative of the great commission (Matthew 28:19-20) and why the word disciples, and not converts, is used.

The book is a great read for getting basic theological insight into the world of marketplace ministry. Anyone wanting a basic understanding of BAM would gain from reading the book. I would recommend the section on Paul to even those well read in BAM. What makes this book a must read are insights into Paul and the manner in which the great apostle combines business and missions.

More People Need To Read This Book

I have to admit, I first got this book in late 2012, but I didn’t finish it until this year, and I'm only now posting this review.

All Christians of every walk of life would benefit to read this work. I’ve notice two ditches believers fall into when it comes to missionaries or pastoral leaders and financing them. There’s the crowd that says “well Paul was a tentmaker so it’s wrong for a pastor to take a salary”. Then there’s the other crowd, which I’ve run into a lot as a missionary that says missionaries or Christian leaders shouldn’t work at all but should be exclusively funded.

Mark L Russell does a great job showing that throughout the life of Paul, there’s credible evidence in the Scriptures that he in fact did both. It’s likely that depending on the city he was in and the state of maturity of his disciples there, he’d work, while others he received offerings from. It wasn’t an either/or, but a both/and situation for him.

Another important point the author makes that I had never thought of before is that in “closed countries”, or as he likes to call them, “creative access” countries, Christians are inadvertently doing more harm then good when they use cover stories like jobs and businesses for why they’re in the country. For example Russell writes,

"After uncovering a fake business, governments are apt to change visa regulations, which can cause problems for all foreigners, including those who are running legitimate businesses. Visa hassles drain precious energy and money from missional entrepreneurs who really need it. It is a real tragedy that fellow Christians frequently are the root cause of these visa hassles."

There are many aspects to being a missional entrepreneur, whether in your own country or a foreign country, that the author talks about.
