Thought provoking & challenging read

This is the English translation of a Swedish play (written by Niklas Radstrom, translated by Gabriella Berggren) about the murder of the young British toddler by two ten year-old boys. First performed live in Copenhagen in 2004, the English play debuted in London in 2009.

While reading the text of a play is vastly different to seeing it performed live, MONSTERS illuminates a number of essential questions in a riveting and effective manner. One is conscious the whole time of questions such as: What is evil? How do we stop it? Which is worse: to be the mother of the murdered child or the mother of the child who murders? Who was responsible for this murder? Is our tragic fate, as individuals and as a collective, always to be violence, or can we do something to intervene and change events?

With the structure of a Greek tragedy (complete with Chorus), the play uses fact to recreate the events surrounding the case without relying on sensation or gore. Not only is the stage direction for a sparse and neutral setting, but the dialogue is also presented in a clear documentary style, which avoids manipulating a tragic case into melodrama.

I did not like two aspects of the play. The first was the repeated attempt to lay a collective guilt on the people who, on that day in the shopping mall, did not notice anything wrong or who did not intervene. "Why didn't you do something?" the Chorus Leader continuously exhorts both the play's current audience and the shoppers of that fated day.

The second aspect I did not enjoy about this play was the clear sympathy for the murderers. They're called "two confused boys who have landed in something they don't know how to escape." The guilt, Radstrom clearly believes, lies not with the choices the boys made to deliberately murder another child (James Bulger was the second child they'd tried to abduct that fated day) but with a society that (a) doesn't intervene and (b) allows the kind of life the two boys and their families had. "Somebody should have given us a different life," says Jon's mother. We make our own choices in life: many people who live in dire circumstances of poverty do not choose, as these two boys did, to murder for no real apparent reason whatsoever.

Scene 13 ("Children who have murdered other children") was the most shocking. An almost casual list of gruesome child on childe murder cases, dating back to 1748, was quite horrifying. Once again, though, Radstrom turns the guilt away from the children and onto a society that stands by without intervening, making the point that a violent society will breed violent children capable of individual acts of indescribable cruelty.

This was a thought-provoking and challenging text raising many fundamental issues that need to be explored if humanity is to have any hope of understanding, and perhaps overcoming, the inherent darkness (evil?) that lies within our nature.

Tabloid-style spooky stories

I love "true" ghost stories and where ever I go, I try do go on ghost walks and read up on local stories, so I didn't hesitate when I found this book. I should have saved myself the trouble: this volume is neither scary nor well written nor of much use if you plan to go explore the spooky side of your neighbourhood. First of all, the stories are very short, and often very vague in details. Names are obviously made up, addresses not given "by request of the current owners" etc.; there are no sources, and the writing is amazingly bad. What annoyed me most, however, were moral judgments the author has cleverly tried to sneak into the story, such as indiscriminately condemning abortions, or saying that a woman who had a relationship outside marriage was not fit to be a teacher.
Low on information on hauntings, and not even entertaining.

Most of the stories were new to me, and all were interesting with a lot of background information on what likely cause(s) were behind the activity. The book was well written, free of spelling errors and was colorful / entertaining.

Amazingly Insightful.

I picked up The Happiness Paradox in a bookstore and once I started reading I could not put it down. In particular, I found the author's chapter on romance and love absolutely stunning; he offered up one brutal truth after another in this calm, matter of fact tone that I really enjoyed. The key point in that chapter for me was that romantic relationships contain inherent contradictions that cannot and should not be resolved such as freedom and commitment; permanence and dissolution. In fact, according to the author, the key to a happy relationship is for these opposite qualities, with complete integrity, to exist simultaneously. For example, the constant presence of possible dissolution through death, abandonment, betrayal, etc. should only heighten the joy and love you have together now.

If you read The Happiness Paradox, clearly you would come away from it with very different things than I did. But I expect that it would change something about the way you approach life, whether in romance, or work, or general attitude, and change it for the better.

A unique Perspective, well-argued, amazing book

I don't know where to begin. The thesis of the book states that we are destined to seek freedom and justification in life, a that these two endeavors are forever at odds. It is not that simple, though. Marar addresses the need for all of us to be respected and loved in society and by individuals, and how perecived judgment can influence how we feel about ourselves. We look for worthy audiences, such as family and lovers, to validate us, while also seeking to strip them of their power to do so. For anyone who has ever thought "why am I doing this? Why do I live my life this way?", this book will articulate what you have suspected all along: we can't get to that place of feeling completely free from judgment and influence and also to a place of feeling justified/respected/validated by others because they are at odds. Such a balance does not exist. It is futile. Yet, we can't help it, we seek both simultaneously .......AWESOME. Marar describes his ideas in such a sharp and clear manner, drawing from a rich array of sources, that you feel very complete when you have finished each chapter. Good stuff.

An exceptional book about happiness

There are hundreds of terrible books about happiness. To most of them one star would be too much. They just present great number of naive ideas and give a lot of stupid advices. Not here. Marar understands how difficult the concept of happiness is and how futile our efforts often are. Perhaps he is sometimes a bit too pessimistic, but even that is refreshing. Marar does not discuss much the studies of happiness, which is a small weakness in this book. I understand that the aim of the book is not to review these studies, but referring to them would be useful in certain parts of the essays. Skip other happiness books and buy this. It makes you think.

Adorable book and lovely gift

This is a most adorable book for new parents. The idea is that the shape and position of the toes indicate the personality and characteristics of your baby which enables us to understand early on certain personality such as fear, lack of confidence or overconfidence. Understanding our child early on can help us to stimulate and guide our children to their fullest potential. The illustration are very sweet, and it made a lovely gift for two of my pregnant friends.

About the Author
Sharlee DiMenichi has taught English as a second language in Zhejiang Province, China. Her coverage of immigration and ethnic communities was recognized with a New Jersey Press Association award for excellence among young journalists. She holds an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University and a B.A. in English and education from Juniata College, where she also studied peace and conflict studies. DiMenichi is a past recipient of the Baker Peace Prize and Baker Peace Scholarship from Juniata College. Prior to becoming a journalist, she volunteered as a regional boycott coordinator for INFACT, was a founding member of the Lehigh Valley chapter of the Bosnian Student Project, and served as a steering committee member of the peace group Lehigh-Pocono Committee of Concern. The Guide provides specific details to the application and selection process for the peace corps. Explaing how to prepare for the service, and what to expect.It also explains that you can stay in touch with people at home and just how to do it.The Guide goes as far as to show you exactly how to write a appealing application, as well as the specific qualifications, and need along the way.
The Colplete Guide to joining the Peace Corps, is a great guide as well as advice for married and older volunteers. It gives advice on how to mentally prepare for the peace corps. Once you have given your application, the guide ecplains exactly what the Peace corps training and being abroad is all about. It explains exaclty what training the peace corps offers, to their workers and what languages you will need to know, along with medical and safety information that you will need.
The Guide is a great book for anyone wanting to know exaclty what they are getting into with the peace corps, and how after being abroad, to return home to the normal life. It will walk you through everything, and I recommend it to everyone no matter their age or marital status, if you want to be part of something great then go and get this book.

This book follows the premise and format of Banerjee's "The Insider's Guide to the Peace Corps" book, which I found to be both comprehensive and well written and which has become the Gold-Standard guide for prospective volunteers. While I laud DiMenichi for adding to the resources out there, I found this to be weak in comparison. She adds tidbits of information without really adding bigger picture value for those looking to join. I'd say this is a good second book to peruse if you've read Banerjee's book but feel the need to hear some of the same topics addressed in a different voice. Also lacks many of the key appendices that are in Banerjee's book, and which are critical for potential volunteers to have at their fingertips.

"We Might Sometimes Go Hungry, But We Will Never Want for Adventure..."

Philip Pullman is best known for his young-adult fantasy series "His Dark Materials" as well as the Victorian thrillers starring Sally Lockhart, but he also has quite a few children's books under his belt, all of which are whimsical and comedic in nature. "The Scarecrow and his Servant" is one such story, highly reminiscent of Lloyd Alexander's work and definitely a change of pace from Pullman's darker, more sophisticated fare.

A farmer builds a scarecrow with a turnip for a head and a broomstick for a backbone, and plants it in a field with these words of advice: "Now remember what your job is, and remember where you belong. Be courteous, be brave, and be honorable, and be kind. And the best of blooming luck." Unfortunately, the scarecrow's tenure in this particular field does not last long - each night he is stolen by a neighboring farm until he is miles away from home. But one night, in one of those million-to-one chances, the scarecrow is struck by a bolt of lightning.

Life quickens in his body, and he steps down from his perch with a clear understanding of his purpose in life: to scare birds and to fulfill his Inner Conviction of claiming Spring Valley for his own. He is joined by a young boy called Jack - with no family of his own, Jack accepts the position of servant to the scarecrow, and the two of them start off on the road to seek their fortune.

What follows is an adventure of brigands, actors, armies, birds, and lawyers, in which the scarecrow and his servant traverse the Italian countryside, fall into trouble, muddle their way out again, and inch ever-closer to their goal. Pullman relies heavily on the fairy-tale motif of a foolish master and a wise servant, for the scarecrow can often be brash and foolhardy, and it is Jack's quick thinking that keeps the two of them out of dire straits. They keep up a witty banter throughout, and their dynamic is really rather heartwarming by the book's conclusion.

Long-time fans of Pullman might notice the reoccurring theme of author's fascination with the transitory nature of physicality. In this case, various bits of the scarecrow fall off through his travels only to be replaced with other bits of paraphernalia, until it is argued at the end of the book that he is no longer the scarecrow that started his journey, but a different entity altogether. How true is this? What makes us who we are?

A similar question popped up in "The Tin Princess", in which a national flag is re-sewn until not a single thread remains that was part of the original, and in Pullman's oft-told personal anecdote about his writing shed, which went through so much disrepair and rebuilding that he doubts that any of it is part of the initial building. It poses an interesting question to young readers - where exactly does our character and substance lie? How much of it do you have to take away before one ceases to be? Pretty hefty stuff really, but this IS from the same author who killed off God in a young adult trilogy...

The story all ties together nicely by the end of the book, and is illustrated throughout by Peter Bailey, who has collaborated with Pullman on a number of his children's books. I don't think it's the *most* inventive that Pullman has ever been, but it certainly makes for a humorous and entertaining read.

Note: buyers might want to beware when ordering this particular volume. The fact that the title-page also credits the name "Simon Reade" as a writer suggests that this is the theatrical adaptation of the book, and not the story itself. Best to try a bookshop or your library first.

Beware! This is not the book described in the reviews.

The book described in the editorial and readers' reviews is not the book being sold here. The book I received is not the novel described by the reviewers; it is an adaptation in the form of a play. Clicking on the illustration to get a look inside shows the paperback novel, not this adaptation. The novel itself seems to be available only through Amazon Marketplace sellers.

Amazon's practice of concatenating all reviews of all editions of a book often makes it difficult to determine what reviewers think about the particular edition one is looking at, but to show only reviews pertaining to other editions and none pertaining to the quite different book being sold goes beyond laziness.

SERGIO CAROLI, PhD, was a research director in the Department of Food and Animal Safety, National Institute of Health in Rome, and Honorary Professor at Eötvös Loránd University. He is the author of approximately 400 papers and editor or coauthor of six books, including The Determination of Chemical Elements in Food: Applications for Atomic and Mass Spectrometry (Wiley).

GYULA ZÁRAY, PhD, DSc, is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry and the Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Environmental Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He has written more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and is the editor or coauthor of three books.
